All MRC volunteers, regardless of division, are required to complete the following courses:

  • Orientation & Point of Dispensing Training
  • IS-22 Personal Preparedness (Contact FEMA at (800) 480-2520 to request course materials)
  • IS-100a Introduction to Incident Command Click here
  • IS-700a National Incident Management System Click here

Optional training opportunities, many offering free continuing education units are offered throughout the year.  Disaster exercises and drills are also conducted to provide volunteers the opportunity to gain hands-on practical experience by working alongside local emergency management officials and first responders in a simulated response to a large-scale public health emergency. Additional specialized training may be required depending on the volunteer’s role with the MRC.

Online Volunteer Training

The Tarrant County Medical Reserve Corps provides online orientation and training opportunities for volunteers, in addition to live classroom training and on-site field exercises (see the Events schedule).

Online courses are available to anyone who registers for this site, though some courses may have prerequisites that require registration authorization. In general, online courses are available for two weeks from the registration date. Registered users may start a course and return to progress through or complete the course as many times as necessary during the two week course period.

Courses that offer continuing education credits are noted in the course descriptions below. Continuing education credit forms, completion certificates, and evaluation forms are available upon completion of each course as appropriate.

Overview

The “Orientation” portion of this training will address Tarrant County MRC administrative processes (i.e., registration, application procedures, training requirements) and will familiarize you with the Tarrant County MRC and help prepare you for your role with the MRC.

The “Point of Dispensing” portion of this training will provide you with an understanding of what a POD is, how it operates, and Tarrant County POD activation procedures.

Target Audience:

This training is required for all Tarrant County MRC volunteers. This course is also appropriate for anyone who might be asked to work in a public health POD, including public health staff, Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) team members, or other volunteers.

Objectives:

After completing this course, you will be able to:

  • List the requirements for participation in the Tarrant County MRC
  • List volunteer responsibilities
  • List minimum training requirements for Tarrant County MRC volunteers
  • List liability protection laws that protect volunteers from civil liability
  • List the purpose and goals of Point of Dispensing (POD) sites
  • Describe the Strategic National Stockpile and its role during mass prophylaxis
  • Describe Tarrant County POD activation procedures
  • List appropriate safety measures to prevent accidents while working in a POD.
  • List effective methods for preventing and dealing with workplace violence.

Time:

  • It is estimated that this course will take approximately 1.5 hours to complete

Continuing Education Credits (CEUs):

The training is approved for:

  • 1.5 Category 1 AMA/PRA Credits
  • 1.5 Hours Category 2A, AOA
  • 1.5 CNE contact hours
  • 0.25 CEUs for Social Workers. Note: 1 clock hour = 0.1 CEU.
